Bishop’s eases past Country Day in boys’ basketball

The Bishop’s School rolled to a 70-47 victory over rival La Jolla Country Day on Jan. 23. Malik Love led the Knights with 22 points, while Dominique Kimbrough scored 13 and David Stotelmyre added 12.

Bishop’s also beat Horizon Christian, 52-46, on Jan. 20. Stotelmyre totaled 17 points and nine rebounds, and Stephen Kaiser had nine points and 11 rebounds. Kimbrough scored points, and Love had 10.

La Jolla Country Day fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 68-63, on Jan. 20.

La Jolla High School secured a 64-58 win over St. Augustine on Jan. 20.

The Vikings won again on Jan. 23, beating Lincoln, 58-53.

Girls’ basketball

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 59-34 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 20. Maya Hood led the Torreys with 17 points, and Chemayne Shipley added 14. Ariana Elagado totaled 11 points and had seven assists.

The Bishop’s School topped Country Day, 38-34, on Jan, 23. No Country Day player scored more than five points in the Torreys’ defeat.

Country Day also fell to Mater Dei of Santa Ana, 49-41, on Jan. 24. The Torreys lost consecutive games for just the second time this season as they fell to 11-7 this year.

Bishop’s eased past Horizon Christian, 73-23, on Jan. 20. Gizelle Studevent led the Knights with 30 points, and Inga Orekhova added 17. Elaina White contributed eight points.

La Jolla High School toppled Lincoln, 37-29, on Jan. 23.

Boys’ soccer

The Bishop’s School kicked to a 3-1 victory over Horizon Christian on Jan. 21. Zach Ostrup scored two goals for the Knights, and Tucker Hughes added the third on an assist from Alp Tutuncu.

Bishop’s secured a 2-0 win over rival La Jolla Country Day on Jan. 23. Stefano Vidali scored on an assist from Tyler Evans, and Adam Malkiewicz scored on an assist from Hughes. Justin Peabody recorded the shutout in goal, with help from defenders Ostrup, Evans, Max Greenspan and Alex Thiele.

Country Day topped Canyon Crest Academy, 1-0, on Jan. 21. Alex Poyhonen scored for the Torreys, on an assist from Colin Young. Mical Bailey registered the shutout in goal.

La Jolla High School settled for a 1-1 tie with Mission Bay on Jan. 20.

Girls’ soccer

The Bishop’s School rolled to a 3-0 win over rival La Jolla Country Day on Jan. 23.

Country Day fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 1-0, on Jan. 21, falling behind on a first-period goal and never catching up.

Bishop’s eased to an 8-0 win over Horizon Christian on Jan. 21. Francis Harvey scored three goals, and Monica Reyna and Kaylie Davidson each scored twice. Lindsey Holman Kelley contributed four assists.

La Jolla High School fell to Coronado, 3-0, on Jan. 19.

The Vikings upended Christian, 2-0, on Jan. 21.

Girls’ water polo

The Bishop’s School swam to a 12-10 victory over neighborhood rival La Jolla High School on Jan. 20. The Knights improved to 5-0 in Western League play.

Kirsten Siegel scored four goals, and Dominique Sardo added three. Sammi Peck contributed two goals and four assists.

Bishop’s secured an 11-8 win over Carlsbad on Jan. 22. Sardo led the effort, out-scoring the opponent on her own by totaling nine goals. Sarah Presant added two goals, and Claryann Olofsson-Loo made 11 saves in goal.

La Jolla Country Day fell to Clairemont, 8-6, on Jan. 21. Claire Altree led the Torreys with four goals, while Alex Rhodes and Allison Rhodes each netted one goal.


La Jolla High School fell to Mission Bay, 45-30, on Jan. 21. Senior Jordan Dyer (154 pounds) and sophomore Kirk Lee (127) each won their matches and remain undefeated in their weight classes this season.


La Jolla Country Day’s surfing and body boarding team turned in some solid results in a meet against Clairemont on Jan. 24 and 25. Stefan Raghavan finished first in the body board competition at La Jolla Shores. He placed in the finals for the second time in three competitions, winning this time by executing a drop-knee 360 and three El-Rolos on one wave.

Hunter Hartman advanced to the semifinals in the surfing competition.
