Bishop’s defeated in football championship game
FootballThe Bishop’s School fell short of its goal of winning the CIF San Diego Section Division V championship, falling to Francis Parker, 51-22, in the title game on Dec. 13.
The Knights trailed by just eight points at halftime, but Parker scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to run away with the championship.
Jacob Kelly scored twice for the Knights, on runs of 13 and 23 yards. Quarterback Joey Moreno hooked up with Hector Eribez on a 17-yard pass for their other score.
“We are very proud of our team,” Bishop’s coach Mike David said. “We had a great playoff run, defeating two teams that had previously beat us, to reach the finals. Our kids demonstrated great character all year long.”
Boys’ basketballLa Jolla Country Day went 4-0 last week, winning the championship of the San Diego Small Schools tournament.
The Torreys beat Coronado, 59-44, on Dec. 10, and toppled Calvin Christian, 57-48, on Dec. 11. They rolled past Heritage, 59-32, on Dec. 12 and edged Maranatha Christian, 64-59, in the Dec. 13 title game.
Ryan Watt, Dennis Roth and Mitch Amelio were named to the all-tournament team.
Girls’ basketballThe Bishop’s School went 4-0 last week and won the Matador Classic tournament.
On Dec. 9, the Knights eased past Helix, 75-33. They toppled Mira Mesa, 71-33, on Dec. 10. On Dec. 11, Bishop’s edged Our Lady of Peace, 70-60, and in the Dec. 12 championship game, the Knights upended Mt. Miguel, 57-49.
La Jolla High School fell to El Capitan, 46-21, on Dec. 8. The Vikings dropped a 35-20 game to Santana on Dec. 13.
Boys’ soccerLa Jolla Country Day eased to a 7-3 win over High Tech High on Dec. 9. Alex Poyhonen, Zack Wolfenzon and Kees Thompson all scored.
Country Day topped Christian, 4-0, in the first game of the Francis Parker small schools tournament on Dec. 12. Wolfenzon scored twice, and Mason Boxer-Capitano had a goal and an assist. Will Craycroft and Michael Bailey split the shutout.
The Torreys continued to roll with a 7-0 victory over West Shores on Dec. 12. Wolfenzon and Ryan French each scored twice, and Rodrigo Cuenca had a goal and three assists. The defense was led by Alex Poyhonen, Philip Poyhonen, Danny Rogers, Doug Rogers and Lee Klitzner.
Girls’ soccerThe Bishop’s School beat La Costa Canyon, 3-2, on Dec. 8. The Knights then toppled Patrick Henry, 3-2, on Dec. 9.
Girls’ water poloLa Jolla High School beat Great Oak of Temecula, 5-3, on Dec. 9. Jackie Walters and Kate Woods each scored two goals.
On Dec. 11, the Vikings eased past University City, 21-2. Christina Kirby and Victoria Frager each scored four goals, while Ariel Arcidiacono and Woods each scored three. Sophia Gumina made six saves.
The Bishop’s School earned a 20-3 win over University City on Dec. 10. Lexi Bohlmeijer, Melanie Boehrig and Katy Feaver each scored three goals.
The Knights continued to roll with a 14-3 victory over Riverside North on Dec. 11. Dominique Sardo led the way with five goals.
Bishop’s beat El Toro, 12-7, on Dec. 13, sparked by Sardo’s six goals and three from Sarah Presant. Gabby Stone made seven saves, and Claryann Olofsson-Loo had eight.
Roller hockeyLa Jolla Country Day fell to Rancho Bernardo, 9-1, on Dec. 8.
Country Day bounced back with a 23-1 rout of Sweetwater on Dec. 9. Ben Sweeney had five goals and five assists, and James Owsiany contributed six goals and two assists.
The Torreys toppled Southwest, 17-2, on Dec. 10. Sweeney and Owsiany each scored five goals.
WrestlingLa Jolla High School toppled San Diego High School, 42-30, on Dec. 11.
