Bird Rock resident promoted to colonel

Jacques Naviaux was recently promoted to the rank of colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve.

He was one of only 39 Marines promoted to the rank this year.

The Bird Rock resident, who is a commercial airline pilot, is the cubmaster of Den 3, Pack 4 of the Boy Scouts of La Jolla.

He attended the University of San Diego on a NROTC scholarship and was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation. He attended The Basic School at Quantico, Va., and Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Fla.

He left active duty in 1996 but has remained in the Marine Reserves. He deployed twice during Operation Iraqi Freedom and has flown more than 4,000 hours in military aircraft without a mishap.
