Bird Rock home tour benefits local school

Bird Rock’s third annual home tour fundraiser benefiting Bird Rock Elementary School promises to be the most diverse and well attended yet.

Six appointed homes in varying styles are highlighted on the self-guided tour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday throughout Bird Rock. Bird Rock Community Council sponsors the event with six tour homes being revealed on the day of the event.

“We’re trying to give a variety, said Michelle Fulks, BRCC event chair about homes chosen for the tour. “We have two very large homes, and two original beach cottages. Some are modern, some traditional.”

Fulks added homes reflect their own distinctive style, charm and pride of ownership, plus the uniqueness of Bird Rock’s neighborhoods.

Lead home tour sponsor for the second year is Tim Golba of Golba Architecture. Other sponsors include 4 x 4 Construction, Jeannie Gleeson, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, Tim Austgen, Wells Fargo, Witt Lincoln Mercury, Bodywear Boutique, Gym Ventures and Torrey Pines Landscape.

This year, the Bird Rock Home Tour will benefit Bird Rock Elementary School. Regarding how proceeds from the Bird Rock home tour will be spent, Bird Rock Elementary principal Bev Candage said, “Our plans for the upcoming funds from the tour will depend upon the mid-year budget cuts from the state. As always, the staff and I will ensure that instruction is at the forefront of our decision.”

“They have such a vast need,” agreed Fulks about funding for the elementary school.

Programs, maps and wristbands for tour participants can be picked up the day of the event at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, 5627 La Jolla Blvd.

In the future, Fulks said it might be possible to add a raffle, or something similar, to help make the home tour a bigger draw. She thinks the event has potential for growth.

“It’s been at about 300 people up till now, and I expect it could grow to 400 or 500,” she said.

Photography of homes on the tour is not allowed. Refreshments and restroom facilities are also not available.

The date of the home tour was selected to fall on the week in between NFL conference championships and the Feb. 1 Super Bowl.

Ticket prices are $20 per person with BRCC membership, $25 without and can be purchased at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Call the coffee shop at (858) 551-1707.
