Big waves bring surfers, gawkers a swell time

Larger than normal waves hit La Jolla beaches recently. On Jan. 13, the crowd and number of surfers at Windansea Beach changed with the size of the surf, which grew as the day wore on. Lifeguards reported several rescues throughout the week, including one at Black’s Beach, where surfer Josh Buran was pulled from the water in critical condition. Hospital officials said he was released from the hospital on Jan. 14.
