Benefactors mark 25 years in support of science

Twenty-five years ago, four women came together to start the San Diego Chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists), which raises funds to support the research of gifted students in the fields of science, medicine and engineering. To date, $7 million for scholarships has been raised.

The San Diego Chapter is one of 16 ARCS across the country working to further scientific study. Some 110 supporters gathered at the home of Barbara and Bill McColl of La Jolla on May 23 to toast the founding and chapter members. Each spring, the organization, which is based in Rancho Santa Fe, honors a Scientist of the Year, and during the dinner program presents its scholar awards to winning students. The 2010 ARCS Scientist of the Year award was presented to J. Craig Venter, Ph.D.
