Beach open; sewer spill closed part of La Jolla beach last week

The beach is now open from Cortez Place to Bird Rock Avenue.

It had been closed from June 5 through June 7 due to a 1,600 gallon sewage spill took place at 7:56 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at Waverly Avenue, said Heather Lade, a senior public information officer for the city of San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater department.

“Roots got into the pipes,” she said. “The water has tested safe for recreational use.”
