Attendance high at La Jolla Junior Olympics
A total of 885 children from all nine La Jolla public and private elementary schools — The Gillispie School, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, La Jolla Elementary, Stella Maris Academy, The Evans School, The Children’s School, All Hallows Academy and the San Diego French American School — participated in Kiwanis Club of La Jolla’s 19th annual La Jolla Junior Olympics on Sunday at Edwards Stadium at La Jolla High School. The event easily topped last year’s attendance mark of 735.
The free track and field events are open to students ages 5-12. Just like their adult Olympic counterparts, the three first-place winners in each competition were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals on a reviewing stand with medals draped around winners’ necks by their school principals.
An event highlight was a Fastest Boys relay team race and a Fastest Girls relay team race with one team of four members from each of the participating schools. The event concluded with Fastest Boy in La Jolla and Fastest Girl in La Jolla races.
The event is a give-back to the community by Kiwanis Club of La Jolla which pays for it through money raised from various fundraisers, most notably the La Jolla Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and the La Jolla Half Marathon.
