Assisted suicide may have been the cause of death of elderly couple found in La Jolla Shores Feb. 29
City News Service and police reports
Assisted suicide is being considered as the cause of death of two La Jollans identified as Howard Frank Jaffe, 81, and his 78-year-old wife, Elaine Fern Jaffe, who were found by police seated next to one another on a couch in the 8700 block of Caminito Sueno off La Jolla Scenic Drive North in the 128-unit La Jolla Shores Heights townhome development on Wednesday, Feb. 29 about 12:30 p.m.
Frank Jaffe had a plastic bag over his head with a clear breathing tube leading to a helium tank, leading police to postulate at first that it was a murder-suicide.
The Medical Examiner’s office has subsequently released information that a suicide kit was found inside the Jaffe’s townhome, suggesting their death may have been an assisted suicide.
The Jaffe’s bodies were found after their out-of-town son called police asking them to do a welfare check on his parents whom he’d been unable to contact.
Autopsy results on the deceased couple are still pending.
