Vik Muniz

For more than a decade, Brazilian artist Vik Muniz has been intriguing audiences worldwide with his photographs documenting his reconstructions of famous images from the news, art history and mass media. The New York-based artist utilizes and astonishing variety of often-ephemeral materials including dirt, diamonds, sugar, wire, string, chocolate syrup, peanut butter, plastic toys and even diamonds to reproduce recognizable images and turn them alien.

“Vik Muniz: Reflex” opens June 2 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla. The museum is at 700 Prospect St. Call (858) 454-3541 for more information.

Francis Wolff

Morrison Hotel Gallery presents “No Room for Squares,” an exhibition of the photography of Francis Wolff, through June 17. Wolff’s camera captured many of the jazz legends of Blue Note Records.

“New Works, New Forms”

Art Expressions Gallery presents “New Works, New Forms - Celebrating Five Female Artists,” an exhibition of recent abstract and representational works. The exhibit will include Southern California artists Marsha Boston, Gisela Colon, Liz Jardine, Sierra Jolie and Massachusetts artist Leigh Rivers. Contemporary in style, the exhibition will feature a variety of media, including watercolor, painting, encaustic and mixed media. The show continues through June 23.

Chip Hooper

Joseph Bellows gallery presents Chip Hooper’s “New Zealand’s South Pacific and Tasman Sea,” an exhibit of photographs. The opening reception for the exhibit is June 16 from 3 to 8 p.m. and the exhibit will run through August 31.

“Coastlines of California”

Cosmopolitan Fine Arts will host “Coastlines of California” through 30. The exhibit will debut a fresh collection that represents premiere coastal artists, Dyans, Hinckley, Werner, Witte and Sally Jordan. From the dramatic coastlines of Big Sur, to the sandy beaches of La Jolla’s emerald-colored cove, some of the most important marine artists have found creative inspiration in the uniquely sublime natural environment of California.

Alexey Slusar

Monarch Gallery is proud to present Alexey Slusar, a new artist to La Jolla, currently on exhibition. He started working as an architect and designer, projecting interiors of public institutions and working as a sculptor in the Ukraine. Slusar has participated in many exhibitions in the Czech Republic and is currently showing his colorful original oils in La Jolla at the Monarch Gallery.

The 7th annual San Diego Jewish Music Festival continues through August 5.

Chelsea Chen

The LJPC Concert Series presents Chelsea Chen, Concert Organist. After spending a year in Taiwan on a Fulbright Scholarship, Chelsea Chen will perform her magic on the organ. The program will be co-sponsored by the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego who awarded Chelsea their highest honor in 2005.

The performance will take place on June 24 at 3 p.m. at La Jolla Presbyterian Church. La Jolla Prebyterian Church is located at 7715 Draper Ave.

SoundOn Festival

The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library will host San Diego New Music’s first-ever soundOn Festival, a new music festival feactureing NOISE Ensemble. The NOISE Ensemble will present concerts, lecture demonstrations, open rehearsals with resident composers, panel discussions with composers and performers, and an exciting community workshop in the preparation of experimental and open-form music.

Benefit Concert

The San Diego Jewish Music Festival presents a musical celebration honoring Dr. Colin and Jane Scher to benefit The Marla Bennet Friends Society of American Friends of Magen David Adam. The performance will take place on Sunday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m.

POETRY AND PROSE

Edward J. Blum

San Diego State University Professor Edward J. Blum will discuss his critically acclaimed new book “W.E.B. Du Bois, American Prophet” on June 9 at 7 p.m. “W.E.B. Du Bois, American Prophet” is the first religious biography on the foremost African-American intellectual of the twentieth century. The book illuminates the spirituality that is essential in understanding Du Bois’ efforts and achievements in the political and intellectual world.
