ACLU files lawsuit against state over school supplies fees

On Thursday, Sept. 9, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU) filed a class action lawsuit for allowing school districts to charge fees for books and other supplies. The lawsuit names the state of California and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the suit and claims that the practice violates the California Constitution, which guarantees a free education.

According to the ACLU, multiple school districts are requiring students to purchase textbooks, workbooks, and other supplies. The suit contends that this practice discriminates against lower-income children and results in an unfair education system.

The lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
