2010 starting off on a high note for La Jolla

By Sherri Lightner

Councilwoman, 1st District

I started 2010 on a high note by visiting several La Jolla community groups, where it was great to see so many friends and familiar faces.

2010 is going to be a year of great opportunities for La Jolla. The $500,000 in federal stimulus funding for the design of the Torrey Pines Corridor Project has arrived. We will be working with the community through the Traffic and Transportation Board to provide regular updates on the project. Once the city has some preliminary designs, they will come to that board to present them and receive community input.

Also in 2010, La Jollans will have an opportunity to weigh in on how they would like to structure the community’s advisory roles on park and recreation issues. Historically, La Jolla Parks and Recreation Inc. has advised the city on issues related to the Rec Center, the La Jolla Shores Association has handled the parks and beaches within the Shores, and the Parks and Beaches Committee of the Town Council has advised on the remaining parks and beaches.

Park and Recreation Director Stacey LoMedico is visiting each of these groups in the coming weeks to discuss options for either maintaining the existing structure or potentially having fewer groups advise the City on park and recreation issues.

La Jollans will be asked to identify the best system to allow interested community members to participate in the park and recreation issues that interest them most. If you have questions or comments, please send them to

I look forward to continuing to work with you throughout my second year in office. Please contact us at any time if we may be of assistance: or (619) 236-6611.
