Jun 25, 2008

San Diego Museum of Art
Summer and movies go together like popcorn and lemonade. Outdoor summer movies, however, are a special treat. A few such treats are listed below.

Also, the Wild Animal Park, now features extended hours and the annual "Park At Dark."
Fans of "Star Trek" will not want to miss the massive exhibit of memorabilia on display for a limited time at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Finally, art lovers have an opportunity to take in San Diego Museum of Art's new exhibit - a special collection of Georgia O'Keeffe's work.

'Park At Dark'
Now through Sept. 1, nights at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park will be filled with "Journey into Africa" tours aboard the African Express and entertainment by comedian Park Master Livingston. Kids can attend "The Poop Show," try to spot the Butterfly Wrangler in Nairobi Village or be encased in a giant bubble at the Benbough Amphitheater. The park also has plenty of outdoor dining, shopping and, of course, animals such as elephants, buffalos and lions. Park extended hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. More information:
(619) 231-1515, www.sandiegozoo.org.

Films Screenings at MCASD
Neil Kendricks, film curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego La Jolla, has been busy selecting an eclectic array of films to show at the museum over the next few months. The Oscar-winning "Planet Of The Apes" will be shown tonight at 7 p.m. On July 10, the museum hosts its free, third annual Parking Lot Picture with a screening of "Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation." On July 24, the series continues with a free screening of Richard Donner's 1978 "Superman" starring Christopher Reeve. Screenings will be shown at various times and locations. Admission prices vary. More information: (858) 454-3541, www.mcasd.org.

'Star Trek' Exhibit
"Star Trek The Exhibition," a multi-city touring exhibition, brings its comprehensive collection of authentic "Star Trek" ships, sets, costumes and props from all five series and 10 films to the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Step inside the "Star Trek" world, sit on a spaceship bridge from the original TV series, get a chance to take a ride through the Galaxy in two full-motion flight simulators and check out recreations of original sets from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," including Captain Picard's quarters and command chair. Other aviation exhibits are also on display. More information: (800) 840-1157, www.startrektickets.com.

'Georgia O'Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle'
San Diego's Museum of Art is the last leg for a nationally touring exhibition of works by iconic artist Georgia O'Keeffe and five other women modernists who paved her way. The 80 works on view showcase major examples of O'Keeffe's works as well as those of Gertrude Käsebier, Pamela Colman Smith, Anne Brigman and Katharine Rhoades. This exhibit, which includes O'Keeffe's rarely seen abstract landscapes and runs through Sept. 28, is the first to present works by these women together in the same context. More information: (619) 232-7931, www.sdmart.org.

Free Movies in the Park
Free, family-friendly films will be shown at the Viejas Outlet Center on Tuesday nights through Aug. 12. Movies will begin at sundown and attendees are encouraged to arrive early for fun events and giveaways. Blankets are allowed, but no alcohol, coolers or pets are permitted. The movie schedule is as follows: "Barnyard," July 1; "Open Season," July 8; "Flushed Away," July 15; "Monster House," July 22; "Hoodwinked," July 29; "Shrek the Third," August 5; "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie," August 12. More information: (619) 659-2070, www.viejas.com.
