Haley Cameron, center, and teammates Ryan Farley and Grace Drozda show off their third-place trophy at the Lakeland, Idaho, tournament.
Senior missed entire year with knee injury
Haley Cameron attended every practice and game she could, but it ate at her that she wasn't on the floor with her teammates.
After missing all of last season due to a knee injury, Cameron, a senior middle blocker, is thrilled to be back playing volleyball for La Jolla High School.
"When I first found out it was my ACL and it was going to be such a long rehab, it didn't really hit me that I'd be away from the sport I love for so long," Cameron said. "But I was able to get through it."
Cameron tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in July 2008, had surgery to repair the knee in September, and went through countless hours of rehabilitation and physical therapy before finally being able to play her first game with a club team in late June this year.
After a few months getting back up to speed, she's back in full force with the Vikings this fall.
Cameron leads La Jolla with 60 blocks and 320 kills, and had helped the Vikings to a 19-11 record and a 7-2 league mark as of Nov. 2. La Jolla could be seeded as high as second for the CIF San Diego Section playoffs, which start Nov. 10.
Last year, without Cameron, the Vikings advanced to the Division III title game before losing to eventual state champion Cathedral Catholic. Even though the Vikings graduated five players from that team and lost two others to transfer, coach Dave Jones thinks they can do better this season.
"It would have been huge to have her last year," Jones said. "She's been the difference this year."
Cameron has verbally committed to play for the University of Texas and plans to sign a letter of intent this month.
"I'm really excited about where the team is going," Cameron said. "I can't wait to go."
