The La Jolla Pop Warner Jr. Midget (Blue) Torreys (7-1) advanced to the San Diego Pop Warner Super Bowl last Saturday to face the National City Diablos (8-0).
In a matchup of the two best teams in the division, the teams played to a 0-0 tie at the end of four quarters of hard-hitting, defensive football. Led by veterans Jack Desany, Kyle LeBlanc, Josh Urbonas, Drew Cowell, Rob Simsiman and Alex Collias, the Torreys stopped National City on drive after drive including a goal-line stance.
In overtime, the Torreys eventually fell to the defending champions 8-0 when a fourth-and-goal pass glanced off of the hands of the Torrey wide receiver in the end zone and dropped to the turf, ending the Torreys fine season.
This La Jolla team, led by head coach Richard Freeman, offensive coordinator Roger Simsiman and defensive coordinator Joel Ruiz, has been to the playoffs for three straight seasons, going undefeated in the regular season last year. La Jolla Pop Warner is proud of this team and its accomplishments, Freeman said.
