Country Day rolls to convincing win in football

LJHS drops homecoming game to Serra

Football

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 28-14 victory over Holtville on Oct. 23.

Quarterback Derek Hatfield directed an efficient Torreys offense, completing 10 of 17 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown while rushing 16 times for 70 yards and two scores. His one scoring pass went to Mical Bailey, who caught four balls for 90 yards.

Connor Gerhart caught four passes for 88 yards, and Montell Allen led the rushing effort with 53 yards on 12 carries. Allen totaled 14 tackles, and Bailey added nine.

La Jolla High School fell to Serra, 21-6, putting a damper on a fog-covered Homecoming.

The Vikings' only score came on Taylor Davis' 14-yard touchdown reception from Zac Zlatic in the fourth quarter. Taylor was La Jolla's offensive leader, catching three passes for 48 yards.

Andrew Holyfield led the Vikings' defense with 12 tackles.

The Bishop's School rolled to a 23-0 victory over The Rock Academy on Oct. 23.



Girls volleyball

La Jolla toppled Point Loma 25-15, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20, on Oct. 21 behind Grace Drozda's 17 kills.

The Vikings also upended Scripps Ranch, 25-19, 24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 15-11, on Oct. 23. Ryan Farley led La Jolla with 49 assists, while Haley Cameron contributed 23 kills and Drozda added 20.

Country Day secured a 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 victory over city rival Bishop's on Oct. 22. For Bishop's, Thea Derrough contributed nine kills, and Ina Kamenova added 29 assists and four aces.

The Torreys toppled Tri-City Christian, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19, on Oct. 23.



Boys water polo

Bishop's topped Cathedral Catholic, 10-5, on Oct. 21, paced by goalie J.P. Engh's 20 saves. Drew Hoffenberg scored four goals for the Knights, and Emilio Marrero added two.

The Knights went on to win the 32-team San Diego Open tournament, beating Santana, 14-8, in the championship game on Oct. 24. Hoffenberg had five goals, and Blake Lee added three.

Earlier in the tournament, Bishop's beat Santa Fe Christian, 12-4, behind Hoffenberg's five goals. The Knights beat Rancho Buena Vista, 17-10, with help from five Hoffenberg goals and four from Lee and Matt Michalko. Hoffenberg scored seven goals in a 14-5 win over Bellevue, Wash., and Michalko poured in nine scores in a 20-12 win over Mercer Island, Wash.



Cross country

Country Day's boys team tied for fourth of 16 teams Oct. 24 in the sweepstakes race at the Mt. SAC Invitational. Alex Fleischhacker led the way for the Torreys, placing ninth with a time of 16 minutes, 37 seconds over the 3-mile course. Noah Wolfenzon was 20th in 16:55, and Dennis Roth placed 23rd in 16:59.

The Torreys' girls finished 11th of 22 teams in the Divisions IV and V race. Sam Staszak paced them, running a time of 22:31 and placing 29th. Lily Wolfenzon was 44th in 22:43.

Bishop's won both the boys' and girls' small-schools races it competed in at the Mt. SAC Invitational. Will Botta won his race, and Lauren Collins placed fourth in her race.



Girls golf

La Jolla fell to Our Lady of Peace, 241-279 on Oct. 19 at Torrey Pines Golf Course North Course. Juliette Garay was the medalist, shooting 1-over-par 37.

The Vikings dropped a 241-276 match to Point Loma at Balboa Park Golf Course on Oct. 20. Garay shot 40 and was the medalist.

On Oct. 22 at Torrey Pines North, La Jolla lost to Cathedral Catholic, 236-279. Garay's 39 was the Vikings' low.

Country Day won a three-team match on Oct. 20 at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, scoring 257 to La Costa Canyon B Team's 271 and San Dieguito Academy's 272. Jennie Kim earned medalist honors with a 45, and Kristin Mizutani shot 48.

Bishop's beat rival Country Day, 230-291, at Del Mar Country Club on Oct. 22. Mizutani's 48 was the low for Country Day.

The Knights secured a 216-326 victory over West Valley at La Jolla Country Club on Oct. 20. Courtney Hooton led Bishop's with a 1-under-par 35, Spenser Krut shot 40, Alexa Bisbas carded a 41, and McKenna Meyer shot 42.



Field hockey

Bishop's beat Mission Bay, 1-0, on Oct. 22 and fell to Helix, 1-0, on Oct. 23. They dropped a 2-0 decision to Newport News at the Highlander tournament on Oct. 24, and then fell to Madison, 2-1, later in the day.
