Bishop's gets polo crown, Vikings fall

Despite the cold temperatures, Bishop's fans came out to support their boy's water polo team. The Knights played hard during the Friday night game and it paid off with a 4-3 win over Coronado for the CIF title.

The Bishop's School won the CIF San Diego Section Division II title for the sixth time in seven seasons, beating Coronado, 4-3, in the title game on Nov. 22.

Drew Hoffenberg, Demian Tschirn, Matt Michalko and Justin Wolfe scored for the Knights, and Christian Ronald made seven saves. Bishop's finished the season with a 24-7 record.

Bishop's beat Cathedral Catholic, 15-10, in the semifinals on Nov. 18.

La Jolla High School fell to Coronado, 10-8, in the Nov. 18 semifinals.

Football
La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 38-6 victory over Mountain Empire in the first round of the CIF San Diego Section Division V playoffs on Nov. 21.

Quarterback Derek Hatfield led the offense, completing four of his six passes for 48 yards and rushing for 47 yards and two scores before leaving with a separated shoulder in the second quarter. Montell Allen rushed 10 times for 77 yards and a score, and Connor Gerhart caught four passes for 55 yards.

Allen sparked the defense, totaling six tackles. Mike Bailey made five tackles, and Indie Lavarias had four. Junior Togiaso returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown.

The Torreys are scheduled to visit Army-Navy Academy in a quarterfinals game Friday at 7 p.m.

The Bishop's School eased to a 49-0 win over Julian in a first-round D-V playoff game Nov. 21. The Knights were scheduled to visit Horizon Christian for a quarterfinals game Friday at 7 p.m.

Field hockey
La Jolla High School suffered a 3-2 defeat to Valley Center in the second round of the CIF SDS playoffs on Nov. 18. The Vikings got goals from Anna Parma and Maddy Sharp, and Claire Mittermiller had an assist.

Cross country
La Jolla Country Day's boys team took home the title at the CIF SDS Division IV Championships on Nov. 22, and qualified to run in the CIF State Championships on Nov. 29 in Fresno. It was the team's third straight section championship.

The Torreys had all five of their scoring runners finish in the top 20. Lee Klitzner led the way, finishing second in 17 minutes, 30 seconds over a 3.04-mile course at Balboa Park. Dennis Roth was third in 17:36, Alex Poyhonen was 16th in 18:21 despite leading most of the race and falling out of apparent exhaustion within 200 yards of the finish line, Alex Fleischhacker was 17th in 18:25, and Eric Blodgett finished 19th in 18:28.

The Torreys' girls placed fifth in Division IV. Samantha Staszak finished 13th in 19:38, Sasha Binderow was 22nd in 20:46, and Maggie Taylor placed 23rd in 20:50.

La Jolla High School's girls team placed third in the D-III race on Nov. 22, qualifying for the state championships.

Nihal Kayali returned from injury to lead the Vikings, finishing fifth with a time of 17:35 seconds over a 2.75-mile course. Courtney Avampato was 10th in 17:54, Tess Plant-Thomas was 18th in 18:18, and Tatevick Simavoryan was 33rd in 19:03. Ilana Fricks placed 34th in 19:03, Jeanine Mejares was 41st in 10:25, and Zoe Wescoe was 50th in 19:46.

La Jolla's boys' team placed seventh. Andrew Farkas was 12th, in 17:12 over a 3.04-mile course, and qualified as an individual for the state meet. Bryant Hammershaimb placed 19th in 17:50, Michael Conroy was 32nd in 17:50, Greg Hovarth was 54th in 18:34, and Alex Eve was 69th in 18:58.

The Bishop's School's girls' team finished second in the Division IV race and advanced to run in the state meet. The Knights were led by Elizabeth Schulze, who finished third in 17:59. Laura Wyatt was fourth in 18:04, Lauren Collins placed seventh in 18:38, Naomi Wagner finished eighth in 18:42, and Alicia Triana was 16th in 20:13.

The Knights' boys' team placed fourth in the D-IV race. Will Bota placed fifth overall in 17:49, and Patrick Hoagland was close behind in seventh at 17:56. Both qualified for the state meet as individuals.
