Passersby probably thought a concert was rocking the Cove on Aug. 27, but it was the Taste at the Cove, a fund-raiser for the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation.
The group provides "a medical safety net" for injured youth athletes and a free Saturday sports injury clinic. The event included a tribute to the Padres Cy Young winner Jake Peavy and athletic trainer Larry Roberts.
Peavy has supported the Padres Scholars program through donations and donates free tickets to inner-city youth through STAR/PAL. He also has been involved with Rudy Children's Hospital's Celebration of Champions and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Roberts was honored for his work over the past 30-plus years caring for San Diego's high school, amateur and professional athletes. A former assistant trainer for the Chargers, he was instrumental in a program providing athletic training services to five area schools, including La Jolla High.
