Rough Water Swim set for Sunday For 78 years, swimmers have been braving the waters of La Jolla Cove on the first week of September. The tradition will continue on Sunday, as thousands of swimmers will compete in the La Jolla Rough Water Swim.
The event features 18 different races throughout the morning and afternoon, as swimmers are separated into age and gender groups.
Kids' races start at 8 a.m. and are 250 yards long, and the 1-mile adult races begin at 9:30 a.m. There is also a 3-mile Gatorman event for men and women, scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
Bishop's junior gets silver medal La Jollan Gabby Salerno, a junior at The Bishop's school, spent part of her summer playing on a softball team that took home silver medals from the American Softball Association's Western Nationals Fastpitch Championship.
The top two finishers in the July tournament held in Portland, Ore., earned spots in the 2009 ASA-USA Junior Olympics. The gold medal team was the Cal Breeze team from Northern California, which beat Salerno's 16-under So Cal Breakers team 3-1 in the final game.
Kaeding Kicks for Kids Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding and Ronald McDonald House of San Diego on Wednesdsay announced a new Kids for Kids program.
Fans can make a pledge for each field goal Kaeding kicks this season. Last year he kicked 24.
Funds will support the new Ronald McDonald House being built across from Rady Children's Hospital. The house becomes a temporary home for severely ill children being treated locally and their families.
Lifeguard tryouts set Summer 2008 may be over, but city lifeguard officials are already gearing up for Summer '09.
They've announced dates for tryouts for next summer's staff, with the first session set for Sept. 11, 12 and 13 at Ventura Cove on Mission Bay. They'll be followed with additional tryouts on Oct. 3-4 and Jan. 9-10 and Jan. 15-16-17. Pay starts at $16.23 an hour.
Candidates must be 18 years old before the work season starts on June 12, 2009 and those who are now 17 must have a parent or guardian show up at the tryouts with them to sign a waiver form.
UCSD athletics rated tops UCSD earned the first-place rating for Division II schools in the National Collegiate Scouting Association's annual power rankings.
The university's athletic department also came in at 20th in the overall rankings, based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic program strength.
The association publishes recruiting guidelines and provides education for athletic directors, coaches and families of student-athletes.
