USCD Baseball in Division II tournament

May 14, 2008
- La Jolla Light

The ninth-ranked UCSD baseball team will be making its second consecutive NCAA Division II West Region tournament to be held in Chico, Calif.

The Tritons are the No. 2 seed in the six-team regional, joining No. 1 Sonoma State, No. 3 Chico State, No. 4 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 5 Western Oregon and No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney.
The Tritons will open up play on Thursday, May 15, against Western Oregon.

The winner of the six-team regional will advance to the D-II Championship finals in Montgomery, Ala.

Last year the Tritons made their first-ever NCAA West Region postseason appearance at the D-II level. The Tritons dropped a 5-4 decision to Mesa State and were eliminated by Sonoma State.

The 2008 UCSD squad has won a school-record 41 games and had seven individuals named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association team.

The Tritons have a combined 10-8 record this year against the schools in the West Regional tournament.  UCSD is 2-2 against Sonoma State, 3-2 against Chico State, 3-2 against Cal State Stanislaus, 2-2 against Western Oregon and has not faced Nebraska-Kearney.

Last week the Tritons suffered two tough losses at the CCAA Tournament.

UCSD fell to tournament host Chico State 7-4 in the first game, despite a strong pitching performance by Kirby St. John.
