Week in Sports
Baseball La Jolla High School rolled to a 12-3 win over San Diego on March 26. Ten different players had hits, led by Peter Sefton's 3-for-4, five-RBI performance. Trent Jemmett also had two hits, and Kyle Zimmer added a home run. Pitcher Patrick Christensen earned his third win of the season.
The Vikings earned an 8-6 win over Mira Mesa on March 28. Sefton homered early to put La Jolla ahead, but Mira Mesa re-gained the lead thanks to six La Jolla errors and six unearned runs. A double by Zach Tonks in the fifth tied the game, and Jemmett's two-run single in the sixth gave La Jolla the lead.
Wyatt Hoff pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with no walks and no earned runs allowed. Robbie Beathard added three hits, a stolen base and two runs scored.
The Bishop's School topped Santa Fe Christian, 4-2, on March 25. Raj Dharmapal had a 2-for-3 day and drove in two runs, and also struck out eight batters in 6 2/3 innings. Chris Ludwig and Damien Tschirn each contributed RBIs.
La Jolla Country Day went 1-3 in the Bishop Gorman tournament last week.
The Torreys fell to Junipero Serra Catholic of San Juan Capistrano, 14-12, on March 26. Mike McKenna drove in two runs, and Greg Wisenberg homered.
Country Day fell to Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, 4-3, on March 27.
Later that day, the Torreys secured a 4-3 win over California of Whittier.
Country Day wrapped up the tournament with a 13-8 defeat to Lowell of San Francisco on March 28. Softball The Bishop's School eased to a 10-4 win over Mater Dei of Chula Vista on March 24. Linnea Abeyta led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kristen Casey drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 day that included a triple, and pitcher Natalie Carmada turned in a nine-strikeout performance.
The Knights secured a 2-0 victory over San Diego Jewish Academy on March 26. Carmada was nearly unhittable, as she struck out 16 batters. Briana Martinez hit a solo home run in the sixth, and Carmada added insurance with her RBI double later in the inning.
La Jolla High School fell to Madison, 8-0, on March 25.
The Vikings dropped a 9-0 decision to Cathedral Catholic on March 26.
La Jolla suffered an 8-7 loss to Mission Bay on March 28. Track La Jolla High School's girls' team eased to a 116-18 win over Kearney on March 27, winning 14 of a possible 16 events. Gina Schumacher and Shelby Rustin established season-best marks in the hurdles races, and Callan Parra had a season-best in the 400 meters.
Christie Richmond, Natalie Russell, Tatevick Simavoryan and Ilanna Fricks had season-best marks in the 800, and Jeanine Mejares, Meagan Bautista and Zoe Wesco did the same in the 3,200.
Other standouts included Allyn Meyer in the long jump, triple jump and shot put; Kylie Henry, Jessica Wood and Sasha Altschuler in the long jump; Breanna Gomes, Kaitlin Denison, Kieresten Gore and Alexis Tracy in the high jump; Lauren Shwisberg in the pole vault; and Jasmine Graze and Carmen Spicer in shot put.
La Jolla put together some solid individual results at the Mt. Carmel Invitational on March 29. Most notable was Nihal Kayali's performance in the girls' 1,600, in which the senior set a school record with a time of 5 minutes, 5.66 seconds.
