Surf's up at UCSD

A well-known surfing Web site listed UC San Diego as the top campus in the nation for catching a wave, the university announced Tuesday.

Surfline.com

touted UCSD's proximity and access to surf, most notably the breaks at Black's Beach, its nationally ranked surf team, surf classes and cadre of surfing professors and alumni.

"UC San Diego has high academic standards, but it's a great environment for surfing,'' said Tyler Callaway, the coach of UCSD's surf team. "Our team has a lot of dedicated students and our surfers are the best of the best.''

UCSD was followed by UC Santa Cruz, California Polytechnic State University, UC Santa Barbara, University of Hawaii, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, University of Rhode Island, Pepperdine University, Humboldt State University and the Florida Institute of Technology.
