Hearing set for Wednesday on La Jolla seals rope barriers

A public hearing on the proposal to put the rope barrier separating harbor seals from humans at La Jolla's Children's Pool up year round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at City Council Chambers, 12th Floor, City Administration Building, 202 C St. in downtown San Diego.

Following testimony, a hearing officer will approve, conditionally approve or deny an application for an amendment to Coastal Development and Site Development permits to install and maintain, year-round and in perpetuity, a rope barrier with a 3-foot ocean access opening creating a buffer between humans and pinnipeds at the popular pool.

The hearing officer's decision is final unless appealed to the Planning Commission.

The rope barrier project was determined to be categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQUA) on Aug. 3.
