La Jolla Gallery Wine Walk & Taste, is alive and well and happening again Nov. 11, even if Promote La Jolla which started the event eight years ago, isn’t.
Fifteen local art galleries will be serving 30 unique tastings of wine and offering delicious samplings from 18 La Jolla restaurants that evening from 5 to 9 p.m.
Those who purchase the $35 tickets get a map and a punch card to visit the participating galleries.
“We do plan to sell about 1,000 tickets,” said Jenna Thompson of McFarlane Productions, which is marketing the event. “We’ve sold out in the past.”
Last year’s event, though, lost money, in part because a number of free tickets were given out, according to PLJ board reports in late 2009.
Jennifer Clark, who continues to serve on the board of Promote La Jolla and as an adviser to the city-managed La Jolla Business Improvement District, said historically presales have been slow, but added, “I don’t know that it means anything.”
Clark noted the event never has been a big moneymaker and that, with financially troubled PLJ all but disbanded and the city controlling the purse strings, this year’s function is more about promotion than fundraising.
“The idea is for people to mingle and meet,” she said. “We can still host this event and keep it alive. The most important thing is getting people in who might otherwise not come to La Jolla, get them to sample tastings from the restaurants and introduce them to the art galleries. The mindset is to just keep people coming to La Jolla, get them exposed to our businesses, and have a good time in the meantime.”
Tickets can be purchased at participating restaurants and galleries or at
