For a brand new casual spot for breakfast or lunch, head over to the Scripps Seaside Forum where Guiseppe Cuffa opened Caroline’s Seaside Cafe on Aug. 8.
Located on the south end of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography property at the Scripps Seaside Forum, Caroline’s is already a gathering spot for faculty and students.
But it should also be a draw for La Jollans looking for a new weekend breakfast, brunch or lunch destination. Lifeguards on breaks and beachgoers may even find it to their liking.
There’s indoor seating — although since it’s surrounded by glass it’s got wide-open views — and outdoor dining under the sail-like awnings.
“Amazing views,” said Cuffa, who was hard at work in the small kitchen last week, helping out his staff during the lunchtime crunch. “The whole idea was to keep it casual” and fitting with the LEED-certified building.
He describes the cuisine as “healthy and creative California-style” with hot and cold breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, soups, espresso drinks, baked goods, and desserts — complete with a kid’s meal. They also serve beer and wine as well as bloody Marys and margaritas on the weekends. Orders are placed at the counter and delivered to your table.
Caroline’s becomes Cuffa’s third café, joining the Museum Café at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla and the European-style bistro Sculpture Court Café at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Selected by UCSD from among 20 companies who submitted requests for proposals, Cuffa also operates a catering company.
The cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m.), and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, except during UCSD holidays and campus closures. For the public, there is a small amount of metered parking in the lot on El Paseo Grande at La Jolla Shores Blvd. or find a spot in the neighborhood.
