PLJ weathers some recent challenges

BY RICK WILDMAN

Is there nothing that we La Jollans, working together, cannot accomplish? Now that our friends and neighbors have saved the Fourth of July fireworks, this year's display promises to light up La Jolla in spectacular fashion with the addition of the Marine Corps Band.

Deborah Marengo, Adam Harris, George Hauer and each of you who supported this most recent miracle deserve major kudos.

New collaborations bring promise that the coming January 2010 La Jolla Motor Car Classic will take a giant step toward becoming a world-class event. The La Jolla Historical Society will now play the central role in this event. Despite these difficult financial times, Pam Slater-Price and the rest of the Board of Supervisors approved a grant to PLJ to help us to continue to support the Classic.

Any difficulties that PLJ has faced have served only to cement our community and to bring out the best qualities of each of our members. Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to keep things moving forward. With PLJ board elections just around the corner, we are all optimistic that there will be even greater interest from PLJ members who want to step forward to serve our business community.

With guidance from the city of San Diego, we expect that our financial house will be in order shortly. This will enable us to responsibly choose a strong executive director from among many qualified candidates. Please join us. We meet at 3 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the La Jolla Library.

Rick Wildman is president of Promote La Jolla.
