Show some respect

I attended a meeting concerning the Children's Pool on June 25 at La Jolla High School.
It was conducted by council member Mrs. Lightner. She requested a respectful tone be maintained by all.

After many speakers, one young woman who spoke in favor of the seals remaining said, "Why should we pay attention to a bunch of selfish middle-aged people who are against this?" Targeting an age group and insulting them publicly was vicious and irresponsible. It was not only disappointing but also revealing that a few of her supporters applauded and cheered her remarks, and that she was not rebuked.

Humane solutions

Humans have inadvertently enticed a seal population to flourish at the Children's Pool for years. It is now our job to assure a safe and healthy environment there and to propose solutions to ameliorate the bacterial problem created by the seals' wastes that do not involve animal cruelty.

Seals are intelligent animals and can be trained and conditioned via positive means. By understanding the biological cues to which they respond, perhaps they can be positively enticed to spend less time in the Children's Pool area to assure there is less bacterial contamination of the waters. If not, it is our job to devise a drainage system or redesign the pool such that water may naturally wash away the biological wastes created by the seals, with the ebb and flow of the tides.

The solution is scientific, biological, humane, and should not involve the courts. Shame on San Diego for even entertaining such nonsense from some attorney.
