New councilwoman is already facing challenges

I could never have imagined the way in which the events of my inaugural month in office have transpired.

On Monday, Dec. 8, shortly after the finish of the inaugural ceremony, a Marine F/A-18 Hornet crashed into a quiet residential neighborhood of south University City. Later that day, at the scene of the crash, I witnessed the remarkable professionalism of San Diego Police and Fire Departments, which should be commended for their rapid, thorough response.

The residents of University City should also be recognized for their generous outpouring of support for Don Yoon, who lost his family in the crash. I was pleased to see so many residents participate in the public forum regarding the crash held that week. Unanswered questions remain. I eagerly await the results of the Marine Corps investigation into the crash. My goal is to work with community members, federal officials, and the Marine Corps to do everything in my power to ensure that a tragedy such as this one never happens again in the City of San Diego.

The budget amendment approved immediately before I took office has had a large impact on neighborhood services - notably the skate parks, libraries, and recreation centers. Services of these kinds are what bring value to our communities; rest assured, we will seek to protect as many as we can in the months and years to come.

It is an honor to serve the people of District One as your City Councilmember. While San Diego faces many challenges in the next months and years, my highest priority is to represent you, the people, and to provide assistance and support in the manner we hope and expect from our government. Please contact me at (619) 236-6611 or SherriLightner@sandiego.gov if my staff or I can assist you, if you have an opinion on a particular issue, or if you have a helpful suggestion.

Sherri S. Lightner is the councilmember for the First District.
