Missing lifeguard
Are you aware that there is no lifeguard coverage of the Children's Pool since the lifeguard tower was condemned. On Saturday, a woman nearly drowned while swimming at the Children's Pool. Fortunately, she was rescued by a swimmer. Below is my letter to Mayor Sanders describing the incident. Please note that there were over 100 bathers on the beach at the time of the incident.

Dear Mr. Mayor:

Late afternoon on Saturday, June 20, a woman was rescued by a swimmer at the Children's Pool. She was brought on to the beach where she collapsed on the sand.

There were over 100 people at the Children's Pool at that time.

A swimmer, David Pierce, ran from the beach to the temporary lifeguard tower overlooking Wipeout Beach for lifeguard assistance. The woman was attended to by the lifeguard and local swimmer, Dave Johnson, a RN, until paramedics arrived. The paramedics attended to her and moved her off the beach by using the emergency dirt ramp, which was hindered by the fact that the gate was locked and no key was available. Luckily, they were able to negotiate the gate by getting her under it. She was taken to the hospital.

The two temporary lifeguard towers do not provide any coverage of the area. The tower overlooking Wipeout Beach can't see the Children's Pool, the Scripps Park lifeguard tower is too far from the Children's Pool to be of much value.

The Children's Pool needs a lifeguard visually on site. A lifeguard stated that a temporary tower is to be built on top of the temporary lifeguard office trailer to provide visual coverage of the Children's Pool and solve the visual problem, but we need a lifeguard now. The city dodged a bullet today by a swimmer rescuing this woman. It's time for the city to manage the beach for its intended use as a swimming beach.

Yours Truly,

Homeless entrepreneur?
The other day, my husband and I used the cross bridge over Torrey Pines Road to go to Starbucks. We looked down and saw a "homeless" man who had set up camp under the pedestrian bridge, sitting using both hands to hold what looked like a cell phone.

My husband and I laughed and jokingly said, "He's on his Blackberry." Lo and behold ... as we walked closer, that was exactly what he was doing!

A homeless/panhandler using a Blackberry to text away ... If that doesn't show everything that is wrong with the sympathy these people receive then I don't know what does.

This same man was soon standing there amongst traffic holding his sign, asking for my hard-earned money. I wonder what he would have said had I offered to pay his Verizon data plan bill instead. "Groan."
