La Jolla resident and Cathedral Catholic High School student William Main Jr., 17, was one of a select group of approximately 2,250 young men and women invited by the U.S. Naval Academy to attend its Summer Seminar program this year.
More than 17,000 students applied from around the nation and internationally to attend the program, for those who have completed their junior year in high school and are considering applying for admission to the Naval Academy.
At Summer Seminar, held in early June, prospective applicants learned about life at the Naval Academy. They attended eight 90-minute workshops, covering subjects from information technology, naval architecture and mechanical engineering, to oceanography, mathematics, history and meteorology. Students also participated in seamanship and navigation classes and took an actual cruise aboard a Navy Yard Patrol (YP) Craft.
William will enter his senior year at Cathedral Catholic High School this fall. He is on the track team, lettered as a member of the varsity football team, and was named to the San Diego Union Tribune's All Academic Team. He also serves on Cathedral's Campus Ministry Leadership Team.
William has been a Boy Scout for 11 years and a member of Troop 4, La Jolla, for the last six years. In addition to serving as senior patrol leader, he has represented his troop at the National Youth Leadership Training and earned his Eagle Scout designation when he was 16. William serves on the Leadership Team for the Gathering Group, a youth group comprising high school students from several San Diego-area churches.
William's grandfather, Capt. Gerald Fulk, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of '56, and helped inspire his interest in a naval career. Every male member of William's family, dating back several generations, has served in the U.S. military.
