A record 190 youngsters turned out Saturday for the La Jolla Shores Surfing Association's 10th Annual Menehune Surf Contest at La Jolla Shores .
The youth, ages 18 and under, competed in longboard, shortboard and novice divisions. While the kids wowed spectators with their skillful surfing maneuvers, the beach came alive with banners, tents and good vibes as dozens of surf club volunteers signed in nervous competitors, passed out goodie bags, judged heats, tallied scores, and hosted a BBQ, raffle, and silent auction for the participating families.
Major sponsors include PB Surf Shop, Excel Fitness, Reef, Rusty's Boardhouse, SeaBrothers Surfboards, Alan Beels Surfboard Services, Surf Diva, Sector 9, the Big Biz Show, and Southcoast surf shops.
Proceeds from the event go to the Sundt Memorial Foundation; Friends of La Jolla Shores for the sculpture of JJ, the baby gray whale, at Kellogg Park playground; San Diego Coastkeeper, SurfAid International, the Rell Sunn Educational Fund and the Door of Faith Orphanage in Baja, Mexico.
This year, during the awards ceremony, Sundt foundation founder and director Jon Sundt invited participants to watch the "Natural High" DVDs they received in their goodie bags, and participate in a special essay contest. The writer of the best essay will win a custom surfboard.
