Professor Tony Hunter, Ph.D., was recently appointed as the first holder of the Frederick W. and Joanna J. Mitchell Chair at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
The endowed chair was created in memory of their daughter Marian Mitchell through a $2 million gift by the estate of Frederick W. Mitchell. It was established under the Joan Klein Jacobs and Irwin Mark Jacobs Senior Scientist Endowed Chair Challenge, which augments the Mitchell estate's gift with an additional $1 million.
Hunter is an American Cancer Society professor and a senior scientist in Salk's Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory. As director of the institute's NCI-designated Cancer Center, he studies how cells regulate their growth and division, and how mutations in genes that regulate growth lead to cancer.
UCSD professor honored
Edward H. Koo, professor of neuroscience at UCSD School of Medicine, was one of four scientists who recently received a MetLife Foundation Award for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease.
They were recognized for complementary approaches to Alzheimer's research. Koo has been working with Todd. E. Golde, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Florida. They identified a key to decreasing production of an amino acid that holds promise for developing drug therapies for Alzheimer's.
Scripps pair to speak
Chris Van Gorder, president and chief executive officer of Scripps Health, and A. Brent Eastman, M.D., chief medical officer of Scripps Health, will talk about their recent trip as part of a Scripps relief team that went to Haiti at 7 p.m. March 16 at La Jolla United Methodist Church.
They were among the first group of 11 Scripps nurses, physicians and support staff, most with disaster relief experience, who traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to provide medical relief to one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake.
The free presentation will be held at the church at 6063 La Jolla Blvd.
A second group of Scripps physicians and nurses went to Haiti for a week in late February to serve at Hospital Saint Francois de Sales in Port-au-Prince.
In addition to providing much-needed humanitarian relief, the Scripps team brought back valuable lessons on post-earthquake health care needs.
