UCSD ranked in top 50

UCSD is ranked among the nation's top 50 "Best Value" public colleges for 2010 by The Princeton Review, one of America's most widely known education service companies.

The publication listed its annual ranking of the 50 private and 50 public "best value colleges" recently, based on its surveys of administrators and students at more than 650 public and private colleges and universities.

Altman picked for position

La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology has appointed La Jolla resident Amnon Altman, Ph.D., a longtime faculty member, to the newly created position of director, scientific affairs. As director, he will assist institute President and Chief Scientific Officer Mitchell Kronenberg, Ph.D., with expanding management activities related to the institute's growth and research program.

The La Jolla Institute is an international leader in immunology research and San Diego's only research institution focused on solving immune-mediated disorders ranging from Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes to infectious diseases to cancer.

As part of the changes, Kronenberg, previously president and scientific director, has also been promoted to chief scientific officer.

Professor honored

Shu Chien, a pioneer in the growing field of bioengineering who teaches at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, was awarded the 2009 Presidential Science Prize from the president of the Republic of China in Taiwan.

The award was established nine years ago to recognize innovative researchers who have made monumental contributions to international research in the fields of mathematics and physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and applied sciences, especially those scholars whose works have had a major impact on the development and applications of these fields in Taiwan.

Chien has played a major role in biomedical sciences in Taiwan, including the establishment of first-rate research institutions, initiation of exemplary scientific review system, training of talented young scientists, and fostering world-class research. This was the first time the Presidential Prize was given to a scientist working outside of Taiwan.

Chien joined the UCSD faculty in 1988 and became the founding chair of the Department of Bioengineering in 1994 and is founding director of the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering at UCSD. He also heads the new Institute for Engineering Medicine which is working to translate creative ideas into clinical medicine and novel products that will transform patient care and improve the health and well-being of people.

Scripps elects chairman

Bob Tjosvold, former commercial market executive and market president of San Diego County for Bank of America, has been elected chairman of the 14-member Scripps Health Board of Trustees.

Tjosvold retired from Bank of America in 2006 after 38 years with the company.

"The expertise and commitment of caring community leaders like Bob Tjosvold, who serve as unpaid volunteers on the Scripps Health Board of Trustees, offer critical strategic direction and oversight in meeting our nonprofit health care mission and our business needs in today's challenging economy," Scripps President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Van Gorder said.

Tjosvold has been active in San Diego civic events for more than 20 years.
