City encouraging recycling of Christmas trees

Residents can drop off Christmas trees at 16 locations around San Diego to be recycled for free between now and Jan. 23.

There will also be curbside pickup of Christmas trees for those with curbside yard waste collection, according to the city's Environmental Services Department.

According to the Environmental Services Department, green waste, such as yard clippings and other materials, including Christmas trees, make up 20 percent of the material buried in the Miramar Landfill.

"By recycling their trees, residents help reduce the amount of material in the landfill and give holiday trees a second life as compost, mulch or wood chips,'' Chris Gonaver, director of the Environmental Services Department.

The recycling program, now in its 36th year, helped divert about 1,241 tons of holiday trees from the landfill last year, or the equivalent of about 146,000 individual trees, according to the city.

Residents must remove stands, lights, ornaments and other decorations before dropping off Christmas trees for recycling.
Trees can be dropped off during daylight hours through Jan. 23 at the following locations:

- La Jolla, Kate Sessions Memorial Park, Soledad Road and Loring
- Miramar Landfill and Greenery, Convoy Street;
- Mission Bay, SeaWorld Drive at Pacific Highway;
- University City, Swanson Pool, 3585 Governor Drive.
