Nov 27, 2009

Bookmark and Share

La Jolla Shores residents still have a few days to vote for new directors of the La Jolla Shores Association.

Any resident, property owner, or business owner or operator in the La Jolla Shores Planned District is a member of the association. To see the boundaries go to www.lajollaguide.com/ljsa/.

To vote, you must register via the mail at P.O. Box 64, La Jolla, CA 92038, at the next board meeting on Dec. 9 or with an officer. Feel free to clip and vote on the copy below and attach a sheet with your name, address and a signature.

Here's who's running for the eight open seats on the 16-member board along with their statements. Terms are for two years. You may vote for up to eight.

___ Ed Furtek, Via Capri
(Incumbent)
Ed Furtek has 30 years experience in government and community relations, including service as chief of staff for U.S. Senator John Glenn (D-OH), and UCSD vice chancellor for government and community relations. He has served as a board member on San Diego's Naval Base Reuse Commission; UCSD CONNECT; San Diego East County Economic Development Corp.; La Jolla Shores Association, and is a Member of the LJSA Permit Review Committee. He and his wife, Kathleen Ritzman, have lived in La Jolla for 14 years and have two children, Mariah and Luke.

___ Barry Graceman,
Via Capri

Barry and his wife Susan have lived in La Jolla for 10 years and at their current home for over seven years. Before moving to La Jolla, they lived in Minneapolis where Barry owned his own business and was active in business associations and community organizations and served on many nonprofit boards. Since settling in La Jolla, Barry has been an active SCORE counselor and board member. He serves on the Junior Achievement board, directs marketing and publicity for AARP Tax-Aide for five Southern California counties, and is a member of La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary.

___ Max Ladjevardi
Max Ladjevardi has lived in La Jolla Shores for 10 years with his wife and two children (students at Torrey Pines Elementary) and has passionately worked to restore and maintain one of La Jolla's landmark residences - the Taj Mahal. He is interested in serving on the LJSA board to contribute back to the beautiful community. He is 45 years old with business background and an MBA from Harvard.

___ Tim Lucas
(Incumbent)
Tim Lucas is a longtime resident of La Jolla Shores and currently serves on the LJSA board and as one of its representatives to the Shores Permit Review Committee. He is a trustee on the La Jolla Community Planning Association. He is concerned with the over-development and building of residences that are out of proportion with their neighborhoods. Too many projects are being built on small lots with no setbacks due to insufficient protections in our Planned District Ordinance. He is working with the community on getting the PDO updated. His goal is to help preserve and enhance the community.

___ Weston Anson,
El Paseo Grande

As a 25-year resident of the Shores, he is very interested in helping the association, either as a board member or in other ways.

___ Pamela Boynton

As a resident of La Jolla Shores for 36 years, she has observed the many contributions that the Shores Association has made to the community. She had the opportunity to serve on the board in the late '70s and is pleased to be involved again with keeping our beaches attractive, helping to preserve the charm of the neighborhoods and Avenida de la Playa.

___ Debra Rappaport Rosen

A mother of four and a professional fundraiser with a passion for community, Debra Rappaport Rosen, her husband and 6-month-old baby, moved to La Jolla in 2003. They quickly fell in love with this enchanting place, and six years and three children later, are here to stay. They were amazed at how the community came together to build a new playground from scratch at Kellogg Park, and she hopes to harness that spirit toward other projects that can benefit our entire community.

___ Pat Nissan
(Incumbent)
For the last 17 years, Pat Nissan has lived in and raised her two children in the La Jolla Shores area. She has served several terms on her homeowners association and is currently the recording secretary for the LJSA board. As a board member, her intention has been and continues to be a voice for our local residents, for the purpose of the preserving of the character and quality of life of La Jolla Shores.

___ David Laney
(Incumbent)
David Laney has lived in La Jolla for 30 years. He and his wife have 6-year-old twins that attend Torrey Pines Elementary. He is enthusiastic about constructively facing the important La Jolla Shores issues: preserving the character of the Shores, protecting homeowners' rights against commercial interests, public beach access, beach safety and having the voice of La Jolla Shores heard in San Diego city government.
