Wanted: students to enter the San Diego Regional Brain Bee.

The one-day event challenges students with a quiz about the brain and how it relates to intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep and neurological disorders such as drug addiction, Alzheimer's disease and stroke. The winner will receive a $500 gift certificate, trophy, and airfare and hotel for two with an invitation to the National Brain Bee in mid-March.

Questions for the local Brain Bee will be derived from the latest edition of "Brain Facts," published by the Society for Neuroscience.

Students must be nominated by a teacher or administrator. Only two per school can be nominated. Names and grade level must be sent by school e-mail or on official letterhead to Julianne McCall at sdbrainbee@gmail.com, or by mail to 8771 Gilman Drive A, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Once students have been nominated by their school, they must register via the online application at www.sandiegobrainbee.
com by 11:59 p.m. Dec. 4.

The first 75 qualified students will be accepted.

The event is sponsored by The Neurosciences Institute, the San Diego Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, Life Technologies, The Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation and the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center.

The quiz will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 at The Neurosciences Institute Auditorium at 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive, San Diego. Dr. Nicholas Spitzer, UCSD biology professor, will act as host of the competition, with many other prominent neuroscientists in attendance.
