The Bishop's School announced Tuesday that Gayle Williams, the Head of Middle School, died Sept. 10.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 8, 1959, Williams spent the majority of her life in Washington, D.C. where she graduated from Georgetown Visitation High School in 1977. She received a bachelor of science degree from The University of Virginia in 1981 and a master's in special education from Howard University in 1982. She was the wife of Kelly Williams and the mother of Kristina, Tiffany, and Vanessa Williams.

Before joining the Bishop's faculty in 2008, Williams was a learning specialist at the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, and the assistant head of middle school at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

At Bishop's it was Williams' vision and stalwart leadership that afforded the school a cohesive and invigorating middle school program. Bishop's sixth grade class, welcomed in the fall of 2009, is a product of Williams' buoyancy, seemingly limitless energy, and passion.

Two funds have been established to honor Williams' love of children and education: the Gayle Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Bishop's School and Gayle's Girls Education Fund gaylesgirlseducationfund.com).

Contributions to the Gayle Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent to The Bishop's School, attn: Advancement Office, 7607 La Jolla Boulevard, La Jolla, CA 92037.
