Jack's, a 17,000-square-foot, three-level restaurant complex owned by Bill Berkley featuring both casual and fine dining in the heart of La Jolla, was shuttered abruptly on Thursday.
Deborah Marengo, who owns Goldfish Point Cafe and is former president of Promote La Jolla, the community's Business Improvement District, confirmed Jack's, at 7863 Girard Ave., has closed.
"It's a very sad day that so prominent a business has closed," she said. "You look at the effect of the Sak's building being closed (in 2005 on Wall Street and Herschel Avenue) which had such a devastating effect. Jack's will have the same effect on surrounding businesses."
When Berkley took it over more than four years ago, he transformed Jack's from a traditional restaurant into a multi-themed establishment including a four-star restaurant with a mellow piano bar, a dance club and a tranquil bar with a 900-bottle-wine-list and live jazz.
