Bailey "Tiger" Gallison, 85, a longtime La Jolla Kiwanian, died May 27 after a long bout with cancer.

He was also a former president of The Gillispie School, a director of La Jolla Town Council, did public relations for Mercy Hospital and was executive director of the Community Campership Council.

"He raised money to send over 35,000 at-risk kids to camp over the 18 years he served as executive director here," said Susan Thorning who replaced Gallison at the Community Campership Council when he retired in 2004.

Gallison was born on April 6, 1924, in Orange, N.J. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1948 and moved to La Jolla in 1952.

He was an avid tennis player.

Longtime friend and fellow La Jolla Kiwanian Jack Talbot said Gallison earned his nickname of Tiger from being such a dynamic recruiter for the service club.

"He was La Jolla Kiwanis president in 1961 and he brought club membership to the highest level it had ever been, 152, which has never been approached since," Talbot said.

Gallison later was lieutenant governor for Kiwanis Division 21. His club set a record of attending meetings of 17 other clubs in one week, the most for any Kiwanis club in Southern California.

Survivors include his wife, Sharilyn; daughter, Claudia; son, B.J.; and a couple of grandchildren. A private family burial will be held for Gallison on June 9 at Fort Rosecrans, followed by a celebration of his life at 4 p.m. at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
