La Jolla student gets national honor The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) selected Anafrancesca Y. Communale from The Bishop's School for membership on Feb. 12.
NSHSS recognizes students who have achieved academic excellence. Communale was said to have demonstrated "hard work, sacrifice and commitment" by Mr. Nobel.
Membership in the NSHSS comes with benefits such as scholarship opportunities, academic competitions and free events.
Annual sale Saturday The La Jolla United Methodist rummage sale will take over the church grounds at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Proceeds benefit several causes sponsored by the United Methodist Women (UMW), including missions for women and children, CCSA, METRO and the LJUMC Nursery School scholarship fund, to name a few. There is everything from furniture to housewares, clothing to Christmas items (in their own special department), books, toys and even a special department for infants and children.
There will also be hamburgers and cakes for sale.
More than 50 volunteers will work on the sale, being held for the 49th time this year, and Scout Troop 506 will help with cleanup.

Legion hosts author American Legion Post 275 of La Jolla will meet at 11:30 a.m. March 19 in the Acapulco Room, La Jolla Shores Hotel, 8110 Camino del Oro. All veterans and guests are welcome. Writer Gail Chatfield will talk about Iwo Jima on the 64th anniversary of the World War II battle. She'll also be autographing her book, "By Damnit, We're Marines."
Cooking demo set Learn how to cook Irish stew and scones while listening to Irish music at 11:30 a.m. March 18 at the Riford Center.
The $5 fee will go toward remodeling the kitchen at the adult community center at 6811 La Jolla Shores Blvd.
Mary McGee and Ruth Yansick will be providing the food and music. Riford Center will supply an Irish dessert.

Chinmaya to host workshop Swami Ishwarananda will conduct a workshop hosted by the Chinmaya Mission San Diego from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14. The workshop, focusing on conscious self-management, will be held in UCSD's International House Great Hall.
It will also delve into balancing work and family life, how to deal with life's daily stresses and the meaning behind everything we do. All teachings are based off of ancient teaching found in the "Vedanta."
Hospital to host expo The 2009 Scripps La Jolla Physician Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 14 at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. Guests will have a chance to meet physicians with different specialties, such as primary care, orthopedics, cardiology and dermatology.
