Leader for Global Health Sciences named UCSD has appointed Steffanie Strathdee, Ph.D., its first associate dean for Global Health Sciences, focusing its work on programs for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
Strathdee, an infectious disease epidemiologist who holds the Harold Simon Chair, is chief of the Division of International Health and professor in the Department of Medicine. She is also co-director of the UCSD-San Diego State University joint doctoral degree program in global health and co-director of the International Core of the UCSD Center for AIDS Research.
UCSD students named Gates scholars Sixty-three UCSD students have been named Gates Millennium Scholars.
Established in 1999 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to reduce financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans and Hispanic American students who are completing undergraduate work in all discipline areas, or graduate studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education or library science.
Students are nominated for the program by principals, teachers, counselors, tribal higher education representatives and other professional educators. They must have strong leadership potential and a demonstrated commitment to community service.
Campus makes 'best values' list The Princeton Review ranked UCSD among the nation's top 10 "best value" public colleges for 2009, putting it in seventh place on its annual ranking.
The list, covering the 50 private and 50 public "best college values," put the University of Virginia at the top among public colleges.
Rankings were based on surveys of administrators and students at more than 650 public and private colleges. Categories included academics, cost of attendance and financial aid. A narrative profile on UCSDS in the Review notes: "Mathematics and the sciences reign supreme at the University of California, San Diego."
