Fundraising walk set for Saturday The Bruce Gorder 5k Melanoma Walk will be held Saturday, with sign-in starting at 8 a.m. at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, with the walk traversing the campus beginning at 9 a.m.
Following the walk, Channel 10's Griffith will lead the program.
The walk, in its 15th year, was started by Gorder's father, Charles F. Gorder Sr., after his son died of malignant melanoma. Organizers expect the cumulative totals for the fundraiser, which benefits work being done at the Moores Center, to top $1 million with this event.
Registration is $30. Walkers will receive a commemorative T-shirt while supplies last. A sponsor form is available for walkers who wish to collect.

More LJ students on merit list Four La Jolla Country Day students and 10 from La Jolla High have joined the ranks of National Merit semifinalists.
From Country Day, they are Steven Fackler, Taylor Miller, Benjamin Sweeney and Kees Thompson.
From La Jolla High, they are Steven Burnett, James Giammoma, Nazc-A-Ru Gonzalez, Ciara Kamahele-Sanfra, Nihal Kayali, Kaichen Ma, Bryce Mitsunaga, Caitlin Parmer, Samiel Reineman and Eleanor Yang.
They join nine from The Bishop's School who were announced earlier. They are among more than 1.5 million students who took the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Local man named Vet of the Year Robert Farrar, seen next to his plaque at the Mt. Soledad Memorial, was elected Veteran of the Year by the memorial association board.
An association trustee, he will be honored Nov. 7 at a luncheon in Balboa Park and will be a finalist for San Diego Veteran of the Year.
Event to focus on healthy aging The Riford Center is hosting a Healthy Aging Community Resource Fair on October 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Local service providers will offer tips on keeping your mind and body healthy as you grow older.

UCSD gets funds for Osher program UCSD has received a gift of $413,908 from the Marcella Coolidge Trust to support lifelong learning for mature adults.
Earnings from the gift will support lectures and capital improvements at UCSD Extension' Osher Lifeflong Learning Institute.
Designed to be a "learning-in-retirement program," the center offers lectures featuring prominent speakers from government, academia, the lively arts, journalism, religion, medicine and other disciplines.
The institute also offers more than 120 academic courses, tours and social events for an annual membership fee of $215.
UCSD gains in research funding A recent study by the National Science Foundation ranked UCSD in 6th place among public universities and colleges in federal research and development funding.
That's up one notch from the prior year's ranking.
The study reported that the university spent $798 million for research and development during the 2007 fiscal year.
Propositions to be reviewed The League of Women Voters will present an examination of November's ballot propositions from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Friday at La Jolla's Riford Center.
The center is at 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Alice McCauley will explain the state and local propositions and offer the League's evaluation of them. Lunch and discussion will follow the presentation.

LJ woman to head arts commission Colette Carson-Royston of La Jolla will continue to serve as chairwoman of the city's Commission for Arts & Culture, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced recently.
Also on the commission is La Jollan Victoria Reed.

Propositions to be reviewed Two community groups are hosting speakers from the League of Women Voters who will talk about measures on the Nov. 4 ballot.
On Oct. 18, Margaret Stevensen will speak at the fall quarterly meeting of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). Appraisal event set Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) will host an Antiques Roadshow-style event to benefit abandoned cats and dogs.
Called Hidden Treasures, it will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. James by the Sea.
Admission is $15 for appraisal of one item, $25 for two and $30 for three items. All proceeds go to FOCAS, which supports the work of the three county animal shelters.
Attendees with large or heavy items are asked to bring a photograph in place of the item itself.
Wellness talk planned Classic Residence by Hyatt will present the second part of its Wellness Workshop for its residents and the public at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30.
Julie Stevens, the company's corporate director of lifestyle enrichment, will talk about the six dimensions of wellness. Her talk is the second in a four-part Exceptional Living series.
