Four researchers at UC San Diego's Moores Cancer Center received grants totaling $1.14 million to study the nature, development and spread of breast cancer, it was announced today.

The funding is from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which has distributed $1.2 billion for breast cancer research over the past 25 years. The nonprofit has pledged to invest another $2 billion during the next 10 years.

Awarded grants from Susan G. Komen for the Cure were:
- Randall S. Johnson, a professor of biology, $600,000 for his work researching the relationship between low oxygen levels in tumors, inflammation and breast cancer progression;

- Marilyn Farquhar, a professor of molecular medicine, $180,000 for the study of a group of proteins that spread breast cancer;

- Michael Karin, a professor of pharmacology and pathology, $180,000 to study a group of enzymes and how they potentially affect the development of breast cancer and its spread; and

- Michael Rosenfeld, a professor of medicine, $180,000 to research the role of inflammation in treatment-resistant breast cancer.
