Friends of the Poor and the La Jolla Farmers Market are working together to collect food supplies for Tijuana's Casa de los Pobres mission.
Residents and visitors are invited to drop off non-perishable food items at special collections bins Sunday, July 20, at the Farmers Market. Supplies such as canned meats, tuna, rice, beans, juice, milk, vegetables and fruit are needed. Food items should not require additional components to be prepared, as many impoverished families subsist on miminal supplies.
The agency is also seeking donations of infant supplies such as formula, food and diapers. Friends of the Poor, a local non-profit founded by La Jollan Anita Figueredo, M.D., responds to the needs of the poor, both locally and worldwide.
In the month of June, Casa de Los Pobres served 32,070 hot meals and distributed 2,600 bags of groceries.
The La Jolla Farmers Market is open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is held in the upper playground of La Jolla Elementary School at Girard and Genter streets.
