"Yesterday's crowd of 43,459 was the largest Opening Day crowd in the track's 69 summer racing seasons," Mac McBride, Director of Media for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, said.
The previous largest opening day gathering was in 2007 with a crowd of 42,842.
McBride said the crowd of 43,459 was also the second-largest crowd over all in Del Mar history. The only day surpassing it was August 10, 1996, when 44,181 came to Del Mar to watch the champion Cigar run in the Pacific Classic - where he was upset by a horse named Dare and Go.
