Unleashing Excellence through Creativity

By Kevin Yaley

Nurturing our students’ creativity is an important part of the Francis Parker School mission.

At Parker, instruction in the arts helps students develop qualities essential for success in college and beyond. By practicing performing and visual arts, our students learn the essential skills of flexible thinking, risk-taking and persistence.

That’s why we have a STEAM program instead of a STEM program. Along with science, technology and math, we include the arts as part of the core academic experience.

Music, arts and language studies are embedded into the daily curriculum starting in Junior Kindergarten (JK), allowing each student to discover and develop his or her individual talents.

When students are given a blank canvas or a lump of clay, they are actually being asked to creatively solve a problem. When students are given a script or sheet music, they have the opportunity to deliver lines or play music in a way that expresses their own unique interpretation.

Boosting creativity is also engages students in innovative thinking.

Our Strategic Plan calls for building a design lab, where students can generate innovative solutions to the big challenges facing our world.

As envisioned, the Parker Design Lab will serve as an incubator for students, faculty, researchers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals to develop and test their ideas. Through this type of experiential learning process, students will nurture a concept from start to finish.

By combining design and engineering methods with the creative process, the best practices from the world of business and insights from social science, the design lab will offer our students a multi-disciplinary, laboratory-style environment to reach “as far as the mind can see.”

Francis Parker School is committed to inspiring the next generation of independent, innovative thinkers. We invite you to visit
