County unveils mobile app for emergencies

San Diego County residents can download a new app, “SD Emergency,” to their iPhones, iPads, Android phones or tablets and receive critical emergency information wherever they are.

The app is designed to keep residents and their families informed throughout events likely to affect the region, such as last week’s Shockey Fire in East County, or potential threats, such as earthquakes or terrorist events.

“There’s no more critical time to stay connected than during an emergency,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts. “We’re just entering our typical peak fire season.”

During a fire or other event, app users will be alerted to county updates, emergency maps, shelter lists and maps, CAL FIRE and County social media and volunteer opportunities. An automatic notification will alert users of new emergencies and updates.

The “Ready” section of the app features interactive checklists to prepare an emergency kit that will help families survive on their own in a disaster for 72 hours.

The free app is available for download at sdcountyemergency.com or via the Apple App Store and Google Play stores.

During an emergency, the County also will provide updates, maps and shelters at
