From FirefighterAid Reports
On Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, hundreds of firefighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and civilians will join together at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront hotel to climb 110 floors at the San Diego 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb. Online registration is now open for the San Diego 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb, a competitive event that draws firefighters and civilians together to climb 110 floors in the names of 343 FDNY firefighters who died on September 11, 2001.
The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb honors the memories of the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and is one of a series of such events throughout the United States which draw tens of thousands of participants and spectators. Developed by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and hosted by local fire departments and non-profit organizations in several cities, the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb events raise awareness and funds for Firefighter families who are affected by line of duty injuries and deaths.
Participants will gather on the morning of the event at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, where they will climb 110 floors, the same number as in the Twin Towers before they fell. Each climber receives a badge and photo to represent one of the many hundreds of Firefighters, Port Authority Officers, Police Officers, or EMTs who died on that day. Climbers may choose to compete individually or in teams, and firefighter and police participants may wear full gear to simulate conditions faced by their fallen brothers and sisters on the day they died.
“Last year’s stair climb was a tremendous success,” said Robert Bunsold, Firefighter and board member of FirefighterAid. “The outpouring of support was so profound that we have doubled the number of participants for the 11
Executive Director Jerry Burkey agrees. “This event unites civilians and firefighters in a spirit of support and remembrance, and brings awareness to the lives lost every day to line of duty deaths, cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and stroke.”
The San Diego 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is open to the public, and all are encouraged to register for the climb, attend and enjoy patriotic festivities, or make a donation in support of firefighters and families affected by line of duty deaths and injuries.
