Two displaced by La Jolla home fire

Two people found themselves displaced Wednesday, Oct. 31 in the aftermath of an explosion, which caused a two-alarm fire that damaged three La Jolla homes, causing an estimated $450,000 in damage, authorities said.

The noninjury fire in the 5600 block of Soledad Road, just north of Pacific Beach, was reported around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday and knocked down about an hour later, according to a San Diego fire-rescue dispatcher.

Flames erupted at one residence and quickly spread to two neighboring homes, causing $400,000 in property damage and $50,000 in content losses, she said, adding that the greatest damage occurred at the home where the fire began.

The Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents, both adults, the dispatcher said. The explosion was caused by a gas leak near a water heater, fire investigators said.
