Every year on Mother’s Day weekend, the Moms of LJYB run the show and from the reports, the dads might learn a thing or two about having fun and winning games. Shetland and Pinto is where the revolution takes place, and some of the make coaches didn’t look terribly comfortable squirming in the stands while the kids took instructions from their new mentors.
Because it was the last day of the regular season in Pinto and the playoff brackets were being finalized, a couple of games determined seeding for games on Sunday. The last game on Saturday between PacVentures and Capital Growth Properties was a back and forth affair that ended with a bang. Tied 16-16 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, Connor Hobbs led off with a “walk off” inside-the-park home run to win the game for CGP.
Thanks LJYB moms for a job well done!
Once the Pinto playoff brackets were set, three games were played on Mothers Day and all of them were decided on the last play. SD Pools gave Solis Chiropractic all they could handle. Star shortstop Tony Ide put the Chiropractors on his back to lead the brown and gold. But it was the bottom half of the lineup that came through with clutch hitting in the last of the 6th, skimming by Coach Hartford’s pool boys 18-17. In the next playoff game, Herringbone Restaurant thought they had the recipe for victory over Empire Beauty and the Beasts and jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. The Beasts needed to “mustard” a comeback in order to “ketchup” in the 6th inning. Knotted at 17s, the table was set for Harrison Garfinkel to drive in Alex Goldman to end the game 18-17.
Beauty & the Beasts “relished” the victory. In the final game of the day, PacVentures squared off against RAK for the fourth time in the season. It was another see-saw game that went into the 6th inning tied at 15-15. With a grounder to 1st base, the fielder threw home to catcher Wahl who was protecting the plate as Cody Wechter slid hard and knocked the ball loose in a bang-bang play at the plate with the game on the line. Only Wechter was still a foot short of the plate and while the catcher scrambled for the loose ball to place the tag for the out, Wechter wiggled his way to the plate in time to score the game winning run. What a game and what a day for the Pinto playoffs to get started. Because these are single elimination games, the season has come to an end for SD Pools, Herringbone Restaurant and RAK.
In the Mustang playoffs, top seed Mitch’s Surf Shop fought back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Pharmatek 6-4 in a close game with solid pitching and defense from both teams. In the other playoff game on Saturday, Garage Door Medics upset #2 seed Morgan Stanley by score of 12-3. On the Bronco field, the underdogs both won their final games of the regular season with Mission Imprintables beating Aladdin Bail Bonds 9-6. Las Patronas followed suit with a 5-3 win over Harry’s Coffee Shop. They will meet again on Wednesday in their first playoff game.
Home runs were abundant in the Pony game between Rotary and RBC with blasts coming from Ephraim Steigerwald, Brandon Nance, Matthew Thefeld and Grant Deverman. Rotary came away with a win in the slugfest. SDG came out on top in their game against North City.
“Super Saturday” is the final day of the season at LJYB with Championship games being played at Mustang (9am), Bronco (12 noon) and Pinto (3pm). Pinto also plays their semi-final games on the 19th so it will be a full day of exciting games all around the Cliffridge Park fields. On Sunday (20th) LJYB will play host to the 3rd Annual “Home Run for Chelsea” Tournament and fundraiser for Chelsea’s Light Foundation. Games will be played all day and on all fields with some of the best teams in Southern California participating.
